Subsistence

As the DoD Executive Agent, the Director, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is responsible for: coordination with the Secretaries of the Military Departments and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to develop and implement plans, procedures, and DLA resource requirements for subsistence support; planning for, procuring, managing, distributing, and insuring the wholesomeness of subsistence products throughout the supply chain; delivering items to locations as mutually agreed to by the Military Services and the Combatant Commands; maintaining authorized war reserve stocks; in coordination with the Military Services, planning, developing, funding, implementing, and maintaining the Joint Food Management System; establishing a joint subsistence policy board, under the chairmanship of the DoD EA for Subsistence, as a means for planning, coordinating, and resolving subsistence-related issues; fostering greater supply chain integration by assuming mission transfers as mutually agreed to or as directed by higher authority; coordinating with the Defense Commissary Agency, Service Exchanges, and other entities on matters of mutual support in overseas locations; and providing support to non-traditional organizations, as required.
